Our Future Hospital is a programme which was set up to build a better hospital in North Devon. It is being delivered by Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (the Royal Devon) following the inclusion of North Devon District Hospital in the Government’s New Hospital Programme
The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust was established in 2022, bringing together the expertise of both the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust and Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust. The Royal Devon is a service provider within the overall structure of the NHS in England and our services stretch across Northern, Eastern and Mid Devon. For more information on the structure of the NHS and the roles and responsibilities of providers in that structure please visit the NHS England website or the King’s Fund website.
Stretching across Northern, Eastern and Mid Devon, the Trust has a workforce of over 15,000 staff, making it the largest employer in Devon. Core services are provided for more than 615,000 people, and some specialist services offered by the trust cover the whole of the peninsula, extending as far as Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
The Trust delivers a wide range of emergency, specialist and general medical services through North Devon District Hospital, and the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford). Alongside these two acute hospitals, they provide integrated health and social care services across a variety of settings including community inpatient hospitals, outpatient clinics, and within people’s own homes. They also offer primary care services, a range of specialist community services, and Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARC).
A key partner of the Trust and within One Devon is NHS Devon Integrated Care Board.
NHS Devon is one of 42 integrated care boards across the country, and took over the statutory functions of clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) on 1 July 2022. NHS Devon is the organisation responsible for the majority of county’s NHS budget, and develops a plan to improve people’s health, deliver high-quality care and better value for money.
The organisation is led by a diverse board, which includes representatives from local councils, primary care, acute hospital, mental health, learning disability and neurodiversity.
The Trust works closely with local stakeholders and community organisations to involve patients and service users in developing their services. A key partner is Healthwatch Devon.
Healthwatch Devon is the independent consumer champion for people using local health and social care services in Devon. Their work covers all areas of health and adult social care, this includes GPs, hospitals, dentists, care homes, pharmacies, opticians and more.
Healthwatch listen to what local residents say about the healthcare services they use and make sure they are heard by the decision makers who have the power to change how services are delivered.
